The Seven Deadly Sins

These are the people that John Doe killed.  The sins of envy and wrath are not shown here...for those you will have to watch the movie.

Quotes from Se7en

Quotes:
William Somerset: I just don't think I can continue to live in a place that embraces and nurtures apathy as if it was virtue.
David Mills: You're no different. You're no better.
William Somerset: I didn't say I was different or better. I'm not. Hell, I sympathize; I sympathize completely. Apathy is the solution. I mean, it's easier to lose yourself in drugs than it is to cope with life. It's easier to steal what you want than it is to earn it. It's easier to beat a child than it is to raise it. Hell, love costs: it takes effort and work.

William Somerset: If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the devil, I mean if he's Satan himself, that might live up to our expectations, but he's not the devil. He's just a man.

Se7en Review

Movie: Se7en
Director:  David Fincher
Main Actors:  Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey
The movie Se7en confronts the issues of the Seven Deadly Sins.  The criminal is murdering all of those who he feels have committed one of the seven sins.   Se7en is the story about a veteran, Morgan Freeman, of the police force who is showing a new detective, Brad Pitt, the ranks.  The movie unfolds in a city that is never named, but a place where it is constantly raining or overcast.
One of the main themes of this movie is the tension between Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.  Morgan Freeman’s character, William Somerset, is hardened by age and many years solving murders.  Brad Pitt’s character, David Mills, has only been a detective for a short time and is still young and fairly idealist.  The movie seeks to show the difference between the two characters by subtle differences in choices.  For example, William Somerset chooses wine, while David Mills chooses beer.  William Somerset goes to the library and reads books about the Seven Deadly Sins; when he tells David Mills to read the books, he chooses Cliff Notes.  Also, their differences can be seen in their level of patience.  Somerset has patience with what he is doing. At the crime scenes he carefully looks over everything and is calm about any setbacks. He believes that “we have to divorce ourselves from emotions.”   Mills, on the other hand, looks and sees the obvious.   He wants results and when there is a setback on the case he reacts with the full force of his emotions.   These little differences create tension between the partners at the beginning of the move, but by the end they trust each other for these differences and work together.
The even more predominate theme of Se7en is the idea of sin and who is the sinner.   Kevin Spacey, whose character is John Doe because he was never given a name, is the killer in this movie.  John Doe tries to justify his killings by reminding Somerset and Mills that humans would do anything if there were not any consequences.  He feels that he is setting the example and showing that sins will not be tolerated any more.  He felt that he was doing this for a higher power and while John Doe took some pleasure in “turning each sin against the sinner”; his main goal was to rid the world of sinners, including himself because his sin was envy.
One of the scary things that John Doe pointed out in the movie was that he was not really any different than the average person.  We are all sinners he pointed out and thus he clouds the line of him versus the average person.  We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well, not anymore. I'm setting the example.”  In society today we draw the lines so thick between who is a bad person and who is not.  This movie leaves you questioning this idea because in some way, as John Doe points out, we have all sinned, but since there is nothing radical about it the world is content.  It is only when someone murders many people or seeks to punish the average sinner does society notice the everyday sins.  This movie reflects upon the modern society’s idea of sins and how we deal with them.
